Identification notes

Utterly unmistakable when plants bearing mature ampoule-like capsules are found (typically in the summer months). If you’re bryologising in the autumn through to spring you probably won’t see capsules but plants are still eminently identifiable from the combination of habitat (on decaying herbivore dung, usually) and leaf shape. Sometimes, plants are found that might seem to be growing directly on soil, but this usually means that their dung home has already decayed away or been the focus of dung beetles.
