Sphagnum platyphyllum

HomeLearningSpecies FinderSphagnum platyphyllum

Identification notes

A rare and very habitat-restricted species, typically found in base-rich and seasonally wet flushes, runnels and swamps. It is always worth looking for in such places when certain other species are present, for example Aneura pinguis, Scorpidium revolvens and S. scorpioides but it often only occurs in small quantity. Look for a plant that broadly resembles S. auriculatum, but with prominent central capitulum bud, and only 1-2 branches.

Its branch leaves are broad and very concave, making branches look quite tumid. The stem cortex has bistratose patches and so multiple stem sections may be needed to confirm this.
