Identification notes
Once known, this handsome but rather scarce moss of well-drained and nutrient-poor calcareous grassland is easily recognised. It’s a robust species that bears a strong superficial resemblance to Hypnum cupressiforme var. lacunosum, with which it often grows. But unlike that species, it has leaves with a long nerve and transverse wrinkles, which are conspicuous in dry plants examined with a good hand-lens. In Britain, it is the sole representative of the Rhytidiaceae family.
