Identification notes
This little liverwort belongs in the Scapaniaceae family, and its resemblance to Scapania species is strong. However, it is usually distinctively waxy-looking and grey-green, unlike any Scapania, and its lobed leaves are not keeled. It is easy to miss and to be successful in finding it normally requires close scrutiny of shaded, sheltered humid places in high rainfall districts. It grows on a surprisingly wide range of substrates, including hard rock, decaying logs, walls and living bark. In very high rainfall areas it sometimes grows out in the open on boulders and may form dense, relatively conspicuous patches.
