Meeting details
Orkney is geologically mainly Old Red Sandstone with mildly acidic soils. Large parts of the islands are improved grassland but there are upland areas also, especially on Hoy and Rousay, with associated moorland habitats and some calcareous outcrops. The last BBS meeting in Orkney was held in 2006 and included visits to Hoy.
It is hoped that this meeting may include visits during the week to some of the smaller islands-Rousay, Graemsay or Flotta- which could produce new records. There may not be formal excursions planned for every day giving people sometime to appreciate some of the other opportunities that Orkney has to offer.
See https://www.britishbryologicalsociety.org.uk/event-category/vc111-orkney/ for accounts of previous meetings in Orkney. There was also an article in Field Bryology, May 2020, about arable bryophytes on Orkney.
