Meeting details
Local Secretary for the Field Day: Steven Heathcote
The location of the paper reading session and AGM on Saturday 4th October will be at the Gomde Buddhist Centre at Lindholme Hall. It will be followed by a group meal on the Saturday evening probably also at the Gomde Centre. There will be a field trip to Lindholme Old Moor on Sunday 5th October led by Steven Heathcote. Read more about the Lindholme Estate here.
Thorne and Hatfield Moors form the largest area of lowland raised peat bog in the United Kingdom and are now part of a NNR and under restoration. Lindholme Old Moor is one of the few areas to escape direct peat cutting, although the impacts of the loss of the surrounding peat are evident.
There may be limited accommodation available at Lindholme Hall.
Please contact Philippa Thompson- meetings@britishbryologicalsociety.org.uk to register interest in this meeting.
On Friday 3rd October the Thorne and Hatfield Moors Conservation Forum are hoping to run their Annual Sphagnum Survey 2025 to refind Sphagnum balticum. Special access is granted to take cars along the old peat extraction route onto Thorne Moors and all are welcome. Small groups of four are each allocated a peat cutting along which to record all the Sphagnums. It is an unusual opportunity to visit the Southern Canals, the original NNR at the Centre of the Moors, an activity that will certainly require the use of wellingtons! If you would be interested in the Friday Survey, please would you contact Steven Heathcote- steven.heathcote@gmail.com
